Depression

The economic kind, the kind that IMF officials and The Economist say we are in. Despite Republican bitching Obama’s economic stimulus package isn’t nearly big enough. He estimates it will create 4 million new jobs but we are losing jobs at the rate of 6 to 7 million a year just now. None of the nations that went through economic crises in the last 30 years that came out of did so with out breaking the power of the entrenched economic elites that had caused the problem. Here in the U.S. we are asking our elites to fix the problem they caused, it won’t work.

Unlike Rush and the other fat white boys of the Republican Party I do want Obama to succeed but fear he wont. He is too centrist, too cautious to make the bold moves that are needed if the U.S. is to have a chance. In this Obama reminds me of Gorbachev, a moderated reform who did too little too late; I fear that just as Gorbachev presided over the disintegration of the Soviet Union Obama may preside over the collapse of the U.S. Does that seem extreme? Maybe but the world economy is tanking with us right now. Much of the social safety net put in place under F.D.R. has been shredded over the last 25 years leaving a lot of people with no hope. As for me I hpe I’m wrong but only time will tell.

Derrick Jensen says that the loss of hope is the first step towards accepting (and maybe changing) reality.
